The English Department believes that it is important for students to develop independently as readers during their time at school and away. While the school year affords us many opportunities for guided reading, the time constraints under which we work prevent us from asking students to complete as much independent reading as we might like. In addition, the Georgia Performance Standards require that students read one million words or twenty-five books across the curriculum in each grade. Asking students to read during the summer is one way we work toward that goal. Reading and assignments should be completed before the semester in which students will take English. In some instances, students may be assessed during the first week of the semester; check the details for your specific class and grade. Incoming ninth graders should have the reading done and the accompanying assignment(s) completed when they arrive for school in August. If students do not have English in the fall, they should hold the assignment until they have English in January. The assignments are organized by class.
