Welcome Class of 2010!

Welcome to AP English Language!

Feel free during the summer to peruse this website in order to see what you will do in class next year. Under the "Pages" listed on the left, you will find a link to your Summer Reading. You might want to take a look at this soon.

If you need to contact me during the summer, please email me through the link on this page or you can reach me through Facebook. (I think I am currently the oldest Facebook member on the planet!) I have set up a Facebook Group for new AP English Language students. If you want to join, the link is located under "Links" on the left panel of this page. You may join this group regardless of whether you will take the course first or second semester.

In a couple of weeks after everyone has had a chance to relax, I will post more information about things you might want to do over the summer to prepare for the grueling college admissions process. For now, I'll  simply recommend two things:

  • One of the essays that you will write in AP English Language is an autobiography. (See link under "Pages.") This is an essay that you should be able to modify and use for many colleges that require applicants to submit essays. If you write it now when you have more time and less stress, you will probably write a better essay, and you will thank yourself in the fall. Yes, I will even read the essay, make suggestions, grade it, and even count it for your class assignment if you e-mail it to me this summer.
  • "This I Believe" (See link under "Pages.") is also an essay that you will write in AP English Language that will help you with college essays in the fall. Feel free to write it over the summer and e-mail it to me.

I look forward to meeting you and teaching you in the fall.
Have a great summer!

Take Care!

Congratulations, Class of 2009

I have had a rewarding, entertaining, and very easy year simply because you have been such a positive and motivated group of students. I hate to see you leave, but I am proud of you! On this message I wanted to post a photo of you throwing your hats at graduation, but I haven't found one yet. Didn't anyone get a decent hat-throwing photo in the rain?!!

As soon as I receive information about this year's scores, I'll send out a message through Facebook. If you would like to keep in touch, please join the Facebook group for former AP English Language students:

Later tonight, I will update this blog to welcome the Class of 2009 and include information they need to know for the course.

I have been honored to teach all of you this year, and I wish you the best of luck next year in college. If you don't stay in touch, I'll hunt you down!

We miss you, Seniors!

You have only been gone one day, and we already miss you. Our remaining juniors didn't have much to do today. Megan did homework in first period. Trae and Zack sat in their assigned seats in the empty classroom and then ate the cookie cake that third period gave them. We later took a field trip to the school store to go bargain shopping as seniors stood in a very long line to get extra graduation tickets. Tomorrow should be even more fun!

New Debate Rubric for Debates by Pairs

Because most of you will work with a partner and debate 2 students, I had to create a new debate rubric. Here is the rubric I will use to grade your debates this week.

AP Test Review Sessions for First Semester Students

Download AP Test Final Review

The AP English Language exam is quickly approaching; it’s just a little over 3 weeks away

Wednesday, May 13th

To help prepare first semester students for the test, I will hold review sessions at 7:30 AM next week. You are welcome to attend all of the sessions, or, if you prefer, stop by my room to pick up timed writing assignments that you can complete on your own and return to me for grading. Review sessions are open to all first-semester students, including students who had Mr. Widness first semester.

Monday:
Overall review of the exam.  Download the review packet above and bring it with you on Monday.  If you don’t have time to attend the review session Monday, download the packet and review it before the exam.

Tuesday:              No Review (I have an AP Teacher meeting)

Wednesday       Independent Practice

Thursday             Independent Practice

Friday                   Independent Practice

Explanation of Independent Practice
Come by my room to write a practice timed writing (all types) or a multiple-choice test.  If you write the essay, I will grade it and tell you your score the next day. If you do not have time to write the paper in class, you can write it at home and bring it back for me to grade. In order to complete the MC test, you must report early enough (7:15) to take the full exam. (I have a new practice test that must stay inside my classroom.)

I will probably also hold independent practice sessions in my classroom before school during the first week of May. (I’ll send out more information about this later.)

Beginning next week, I will also send out daily review notes through facebook. Please spread the word that anyone who wants to receive these daily review notes should join this group.

AP Test Bubbling Thursday

Students who are taking AP tests will bubble their information sheets Thursday. If you are currently taking an AP course, you will report to the cafeteria (or media center) as soon as you check in with your AP teacher. Students who have multiple AP courses will only have to bubble once.

IMPORTANT - if you are not currently taking an AP course, you will need to report to the cafeteria (or media center) during one of your elective classes. Please come see me before school in order to obtain a pass. You will need to show the pass to your teacher BEFORE you report to bubble.

All bubbling sessions will last 30-40 minutes.

Thanks!

Student Comments - How Will We Remember Each Other?

During the last week of class, I plan to give each of you a small gift that consists of nice comments that your classmates and I have written about you. Obviously, I need your help!

Download the file for your class period. Write at least one kind remark about each person in your class. What will you remember about each person? What is the best thing you can say? Be serious and not sarcastic. I hope this doesn't happen, but if you select not to write comments about other students, I will not distribute their comments to you. Don't be a party-pooper!

Please submit your comments to Turnitin.com by Friday, May 1st.

Need Glass Castle Monday

Glasscastle Don't forget that we will begin reading The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls on Monday. Please do not read ahead. We will start reading Monday night.

You can get a copy of the book from any bookstore (unless you wait until the last minute) or from a friend who took AP first semester. There is only one edition of the book; therefore, we will all have the same page numbers . . . thankfully!
