Summer Reading
Updated for 2009-2010
First book
Please read Black Boy (Richard Wright) or Angela's Ashes (Frank McCourt)
Angela's Ashes
Pay attention to the tone of the book. Although the book contains many sad events, it also contains a great deal of humor because the book is told from the viewpoint of a usually optimistic and resilient child. If you miss the book's tone, you will find the book a particularly depressing summer read.
Second book
You will select one book from the following list that was compiled from votes by this year's AP English Language students. Please do not read a book that you have previously read for a class.
102 Minutes: The Untold Story of the Fight to Survive Inside the Twin Tower
Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream
The Overachievers: The Secret Lives of Driven Kids
Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace One School at a Time
The Year of Living Biblically: One Man's Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible
Please download the file below. It contains the list of possible books as well as the assignment connected to summer reading. Please note that you have the opportunity to receive extra credit if you complete the summer reading assignments early and submit them during the summer.
